The end of 2009 will see some changes to the National Committee of Deacons as elections are in the process of being held for those retiring from office. Also a new region will be represented on the NCD according to a process set up some time ago. South Australia/Northern Territory will be required to have a representative at our meetings. This will complete the Australian picture of regions: Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales/ACT, Victoria/Tasmania.
We plan to have a Face to Face Meeting in February 2010.
We will sadly miss the talents of our Secretary Bryan Sykes and his wealth of knowledge and expertise in ‘things diaconate’ in Australia. I personally have relied very heavily on Bryan since I was elected as Chairman of the NCD. I know that Bryan spent many hours compiling lists, sending emails and letters to over one hundred deacons across Australia. I’m sure your wife Helenmary will be able to fill in some of your spare (?) time!
Also to Mark Powell, the Western Australian Region representative, who because of heavy work commitments, has decided not to seek a second term of office. Mark, you have been a very valued member of our group, always willing to give input at our meetings together. Our grateful thanks to you.
Because of his retirement from parish ministry at Rosewood, in the Lockyer Valley in South East Queensland, Harry Housen decided to stand down as Queensland Region Representative. The NCD approached Russ Nelson to fill in for the remainder of Harry’s term which will be completed at the end of 2010. Harry and Elaine are now living on the Sunshine Coast, north of Brisbane. We all envy the both of you, enjoy your new vocation!
Russ comes to us as someone who is always organised and willing to give of himself, always with the support of Jan. Russ is the present Chairman of the Brisbane Association of Deacons, and organises meetings and social events throughout the year for the deacons, wives and families.
From South Australia comes news of two more ordinations to the Diaconate. Both were celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral by Archbishop Wilson. Congratulations to our two new deacons, Nick Kerr and Pat Edwards. Also, congratulations to Nick’s wife, Eveleen and Pat’s wife, Jan. I’m sure that Nick and Pat are appreciative of your support during their preparation for their ministry as deacons and we also thank you for your loving and faithful support of them.

Peter Olsen, Brisbane
Chairman, National Committee of Deacons
