Terrence Anthony Hammond SSS
2nd March 1927 – 5th April 2010
Terry (as he was usually known) was born at Maffra, Victoria and completed his secondary eduation at St Patrick’s College, Sale in the mid 1940s. On 2 February 1949, aged 21, he became an aspirant with the Blessed Sacrament Congregation at St Francis’ Church in Melbourne and after moving to the Congregation’s novitiate ‘Mount Eymard’ at Bowral, NSW, he was accepted as a postulant on 11 February 1949. His final profession of permanent vows as a member of the Blessed Sacrament Congregation was made at St Francis’ Church on 19 March 1954 and on 18 January 1956 he was ordained to the priesthood by Coadjutor Archbishop Justin Simonds at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne.
Terry’s first superior described him as a dedicated and selfless priest who was faithful to his adoration and religious commitments. It was also noted that, while ‘kind and generous’, he could be ‘resolute and determined in his opinions.’ Of all the ministries that Terry had experienced as a member of the Blessed Sacrament Congregation to that time, giving talks on the spirituality of the Eucharist was what he liked most.
Terry died peacefully after 59 years of religious profession and 54 years of priesthood in the Blessed Sacrament Congregation.
