Eamon Leonard

Eamon, a priest of the Lismore Diocese NSW was born in 1922 at Ballina and there received his early schooling. He attended St John’s College, Woodlawn and then commenced studies for the priesthood at St Columba’s College, Springwood NSW. He studied Theology at St Patrick’s College, Manly and was ordained by Bishop Farrelly in St Carthage’s Cathedral, Lismore in 1947.

Bernard Shah OCarm

Born in Christchurch, NZ, Bernard was very proud of his heritage and in his younger days would break out in a very high spirited Haka! He was educated by the Marist Brothers at Xavier College and after Ordination in Kaiapoi, NZ, on the 29 July 1966, studied journalism at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology to assist him in his appointment as editor of the Scapular Magazine.

John Shanahan

September 2010

John, who had seven siblings, was born in Glebe and educated by the Sisters of St Joseph in Belmore, the Sisters of Mercy in Erskinville and the Patrician Brothers at Redfern. He volunteered to the Armed Forces before conscription and served most of the war in the Pacific Islands as a member of the Air Force ground staff.

Kevin Noble

Kevin, much loved parish priest of Warwick, died peacefully after a short and courageous battle with oesophageal cancer. Born in Warwick, the son of William and Honora, he grew up on a Freestone farm with his three sisters, Margaret (Comerford), Lynette and Mary. Lynette and Mary still reside on the family farm.

Leo Boniface Mannes CM

Bon was born in Victoria and spent the early part of his life around the Rochester and Bendigo area, close to vines, horses and a German/ Irish Catholicism, all of which left their mark on him in one way or another.

He was a little man, physically, small enough to be useful around racing stables and fast enough to play Aussie Rules for Assumption College, Kilmore, for three successive and successful years.

Brian Gibbons

Brian had a great love of literature and music, with a wonderful turn of phrase and wit. He also experienced a discord between himself and the world which first manifested itself while he was at Manly. He was certainly not alone – over the centuries Jung, St John of the Cross, Blake, Coleridge, John Keats, John Lennon, to name a few – also experienced this discord between themselves and the world.

Ordained in Kilkenny, Ireland in 1956, Robert was highly-respected throughout the Australian Oblate Province as an energetic and talented preacher, a former MAMI Director, Provincial Bursar and a deeply-committed prison chaplain in Western Australia.

Cyril Hally – A faithful Prophet

Cyril Thomas Hally SSC died in Melbourne on May 18 at age 90 after a remarkable life that offered hope and wisdom in many of the struggles for justice and peace in Australia, Asia and the Pacific.
His priestly life can be summed up in his honorary doctorate from the Australian Catholic University at the Sydney Town Hall on 31 March 2005 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the cause of global peace and justice.

William (Bill) Murphy

June 2010

Bill who was ordained in 1942 was a very learned man, an educationalist and theologian held in the highest regard. He also had the odd distinction of never having been a parish priest. After graduating at St Patrick’s Seminary at Manly, Sydney, he spent the World War II years in the Casino parish in northern NSW and then travelled to Rome as adviser and secretary to Bishop Farrelly during the second Vatican Council.

Daniel Magill

June 2010

Dan who was born in County Antrim in Ireland in 1924 spent more than half his years of priesthood working in WA. He was a great storyteller and a very popular preacher who travelled the length and breadth of Australia and New Zealand preaching parish missions.
